One of the most influential of these pioneers was Master Yoshida Eiko, founder of “Asanoha Kai.” Her books not only preserve the traditional Sashiko designs but also capture the essence of how Sashiko was once widely practiced in Japan. These works are essential historical documents. Sadly, her books were published in the 1980s, and since her passing, they remain our only source to learn from her unique approach to Sashiko.
Fortunately, there are still artisans today who were directly trained by Master Yoshida, and Reiko-san is one of them. She learned Sashiko from Master Yoshida during her childhood and youth, as well as from other legendary Sashiko figures with published works.
When I discovered that someone with such profound experience wanted to take my class, I was both surprised and a bit hesitant—especially since she knew me when I was as young as my daughter, Leona. Yet, Reiko-san has been incredibly humble and willing to share her knowledge and skills with us.
Reiko-san is someone who deserves greater recognition in the world. With over half a century of experience, it feels unjust that others claim the title of “expert” while artisans like her remain in the background, hesitating to step into the spotlight.
It is a true honor to introduce Reiko-san to our group, along with her exceptional Sashiko craftsmanship and legacy.
